Koopman on self-driving car challenges

Philip Koopman was interviewed by Bloomberg in an article about car crashes caused by Tesla vehicles, specifically responding to a crash from 2018 in which a Tesla car failed to see the firetruck in front of it and crashed. The article explains that while the car sensors are good at following a vehicle in the same lane and driving at an appropriate speed at a safe distance, the sensors struggle when the vehicle in front changes lanes, known as the cut-out scenario. “The cut-out is one of the hardest scenarios,” Koopman said. “There’s no question about that.” Read the article here.
