The Verge quoted Raj Rajkumar on how Tesla enables its semi-autonomous vehicles. While many companies’ AVs use lidar, Tesla’s do not. Elon Musk has argued for cost-saving by not integrating lidar into the bevy of sensors AVs use, and instead making optical, radar, and ultrasound sensors more effective. Rajkumar, though, thinks Tesla may have disadvantaged itself. Foregoing lidar hampers the hardware capabilities of Tesla’s cars, since optics, radar, and ultrasound all perform poorer than lidar in the dark. Read the article.
