Efimov Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Timofey Efimov, an electrical and computer engineering Ph.D. student, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The nationally competitive fellowship recognizes outstanding graduate students who demonstrate potential for making significant contributions in STEM fields and provides three years of financial support over a five-year fellowship period.

“My research is primarily focused on understanding how we can use generative models to reconstruct images in scientific and engineering domains,” says Efimov. He is co-advised by Yuejie Chi, former professor of electrical and computer engineering, who is now a professor of statistics and data science at Yale University, and Aswin Sankaranarayanan, professor of electrical and computer engineering.

In his proposed research, Timofey plans to work on the algorithmic foundations of the imaging algorithms, and how materials, medical and other scientific images can be collected faster and with higher quality. He is actively collaborating with Air Force Research Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory on the applications of those algorithms to critical areas.

There are many potential applications for Efimov’s research, including microscopic imaging of materials and reconstruction of images for medical purposes. “With this fellowship, I hope to improve our understanding of AI approaches for these areas, and improve the existing algorithms in these critical areas of research,” says Efimov.
