RFID Tagging

BackTrack provides an easy way for a user to keep track of which items are in their backpack. To start tracking any object, you just have to stick an RFID tag to it and register it through the smartphone app. Then, every time you either put the item in or take it out of your backpack the two RFID/NFC readers at the top of the main pocket will scan your item and update the app. If it seems like you're going to an event without an item you need, we'll notify you right away.

Since we are using a 13.56 MHz RFID system, we are able to use passive tags that do not need their own power supply. This makes the tags small and cheap and remove the need for them to be replaced periodically. Our system is compatible with the popular MiFare passive tags which are available with an adhesive surface in sizes as small as a quarter.

We use a Raspberry Pi with a Bluetooth 4.0 (Low Energy) module to process the results of the RFID polling from the readers and forward them to the user's smartphone.
