Carnegie Mellon has
sealed an agreement with Taiwanese officials establishing
new research
and educational
outreach programs with the Industrial Technology Research
Institute (ITRI). "Signing the agreement, marks
the beginning of a long-term relationship," said
Carnegie Mellon Provost Mark Kamlet. "We will
work jointly with ITRI to identify future key technical
areas of research."
Research at the government-sponsored ITRI lab will
focus on circuit design and applications in communication,
information technology, computer and consumer electronics,
and multimedia.
"The lab is an important part of our strategy
to integrate research in various centers, and it will
be funded at about $1 million a year," said Pradeep
Khosla, head of Carnegie Mellon's Electrical and Computer
Engineering Department. The information technology
industry accounts for 10 percent of the U.S. economy
and nearly 60 percent of business capital spending.
"The new research lab also is designed to contribute
significantly to technology developments in Taiwan
and Asia," said Tsuhan Chen, a Carnegie Mellon
professor and co-director of the ITRI Lab along with
Shiaw-Shian Yu at ITRI in Taiwan. [January 2003]
