Amir Asif (M.S. 1993, Ph.D. 1996) has been named Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He has been appointed for a five-year term. As a student at Carnegie Mellon, Asif’s supervisor was Jose' M. F. Moura. Other members of his supervisory committee were Professors Vijay Kumar (ECE), Richard Stern (ECE), and Bill Eddy (Statistics.
According to Asif, “Whatever I have achieved would not have been possible without my education and the mentorship offered to me at CMU. Not only did CMU provide me with an opportunity to complete my Masters and PhD degrees in a cutting-edge research environment, the collegiality of my home ECE department enabled continuous interactions with my professors and fellow students. In particular, my supervisor, mentor, and now a friend, Professor Jose’ M. F. Moura, instilled in me a passion for university teaching, research, and service that continues to shape my academic career even now. The relationships that I developed at CMU are precious and are perhaps the things I cherish the most.”
