Koopman's Role Clarifying Computer Act Mentioned in IEEE Spectrum

August 1, 2002

Philip Koopman's role "finding ways to make engineering issues understandable to legislators and other analysts" is noted in the August issue of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., IEEE Spectrum's article, "UCITA: A Disaster in Progress." UCITA, the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act, covers liability disclaimers and other clauses common in "shrink-wrap" and "click-to-agree" licenses for computer software.

"It turned out that embedded software was the key technical point in many of the discussions," Koopman, Associate Professor of ECE and CS, wrote of the report, emphasizing the importance of engineers being involved in technical lawmaking.
