Choset Leads CMU Engineering Students in Competition Emulating Mars Rover Excursion

March 26, 2002

CMU Engineering students will compete in the 3rd Annual General Robotics Planetary Robotics Competition on campus, testing their skills in remote robotic control, and simulating the challenges and problems faced when unmanned robotic probes were sent to Mars. The students, under the direction of Howie Choset, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and ECE, will work in small teams with lego robots they have built. They will be graded on their ability to land, control, and navigate the robots via computers programmed with topographical maps and data from previous unmanned Mars missions.
