Current Events

WinECE has several signature events that occur each year. At the beginning of each semester, new and returning members are invited to attend a welcome dinner. In the fall, the keynote speaker is a woman in academia who talks about her career and research. In the spring, the speaker is usually a woman engineer or executive from industry who talks candidly about her career development, her work environment and often provides helpful tips on personal and professional success. In addition to these two events, an end of year "Garden Party" is held outside to welcome spring and celebrate the women in ECE who will soon be graduating with B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. degrees. During the year, a variety of social, professional and mentoring events are organized. These include but are not limited to mentoring events and participation in the organization of ECE Day.

What: WinECE Spring Welcome Dinner

When: January 31st, 4:30-6:30 pm
Where: REH Singleton Room

All women students in ECE are invited to attend this annual spring semester event. Enjoy a wonderful dinner while interacting with other women in the ECE Department.

The keynote speaker for the event is ECE alumnus Katie Menzies.

Katie Menzies graduated in 2008 with a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Working in Johnson & Johnson's Information Technology group, she partners with company directors to oversee multi-million dollar portfolios of projects in Supply Chain. Her past work experience ranges from exotic (a technology consultant in Palau) to menial (a stablehand in Switzerland) and corporate (an engineering intern at General Electric) to academic (molecular biology assistant at University of Cincinnati). Katie currently volunteers with Peace Markets, a start-up from Stanford's Peace Innovation Lab, and as an advisor for a Santa Clara sorority. Her free time is spent running, learning about design and human factors, and plotting how to return to academia for a PhD.

Her speech "Career Trade-offs: Industry Advice from 4yrs Out" will focus on her experiences after CMU -- her career-life decisions and ramifications, problems she encountered and solutions, and advice from her mentors (including how to choose them).
