Providing Quality of Service Guarantees in Today and Tomorrow's Internet

Until recently, most applications on the Internet have traditionally been designed based on low speed text-only interactions. With the introduction of high speed networking, we are seeing more complex applications and interactions. Examples include integrated multimedia information dissemination systems, such as voice and video conferencing, and real time distributed applications, such as distibuted games. These applications expect a set of services and guarantees that are not yet present in today's best effort Internet. In the seminar, I will discuss:

A brief introduction to IP and the characteristics that have allowed it to survive thus far.
How applications that need quality of service guarantees are dealing without it.
Changes to the network to provide minimal QoS with recent developments and research in the area. (ECN, active queue and buffer management, int-serv, diff-serv) Things that can be done today, and things that will be done in the future.
What applications should expect from the network and vice versa.

Seminar proposal IMTC - International Multimedia Teleconferencing Consortium

I have chosen the above organisation as my topic of discussion for the course seminar. I will discuss the objectives and role of the IMTC in the development of multimedia teleconferencing products and standards and also touch on the ITU standards which are the current focus of the IMTC. I will also discuss the work of the 6 activity groups of the IMTC in the report and discuss one or two of these (eg. Voice over IP) during the seminar presentation in class.

Spatial Audio Techniques and Applications

For our seminar we hope to give a basic overview of Spatial Audio. In our discussion, we intend to cover issues such as what spatial audio actually is, how it works, what are the applications for it, what are the practical problems that need to be overcome before it can be used widely, what are the current existing techniques for generation of spatial audio etc.
