18-899: Multimedia Communications Seminar

We will conduct a seminar on HDTV and discuss its industry status and technical challenges. The FCC has granted television broadcasters spectrum to transmit digitally, while television manufacturers are currently selling digital televion sets. HDTV provides much greater resolution than traditional analog television, and with digital technology, broadcasters would be able to compress the data in the airwaves and thereby provide more services to the American public. In particular, we will discuss HDTV versus SDTV, progressive versus interlacing scanning, and the ATSC A/54 standard.
