An Evaluation of Traffic Shaping Implementations on a Consumer Router Glenn Stroz, Carnegie Mellon University gstroz@andrew.cmu.edu ABSTRACT: This paper provides an overview of traffic shaping algorithms and possible implementations. It then provides the basis for a test setup for using these algorithms on consumer routers using corporate developed and community developed firmwares. An evaluation is provided to determine the effectiveness of the traffic shaping systems implemented in various firmwares. The conclusion is reached that while traffic shaping algorithms show potential in consumer routers, the implementations are not yet mature enough to use on a day to day basis.
