Three-dimensional models are essential in many graphics applications such as video-games, scientific visualization, and computer animation. Such polygonal models will become increasingly important in next-generation multimedia technologies. While only providing limited accuracy, these models have sizeable storage requirements. Therefore, 3D shapes must be highly compressed in order to be useful for network applications. We plan to discuss current compression technology for 3D models. We will concentrate on Mesh Coding used in the MPEG-4 compression standard. Progressive transmission, error resiliency, and hierarchical transmission of multi- resolution models will be emphasized.
