All
The large enrollment and the difficulty of finding enough staff have
necessitated some changes to this course. The purpose of this email is
to alert you to this and to other things you should be aware of.
The course LECTURE will be increased to twice a week. Some lectures
will be omitted because of travel, etc. so the net result will be an
increase in the amount of lecture time and the amount of academic
content. Lectures are scheduled for 3-4:20 PM, Tuesday and Thursday,
WEH 5310.
The course LABORATORY will be modestly reduced in the number of labs.
At present I anticipate 5 processing labs, one supervised
characterization lab, and one optional characterization lab. The
coverage will be more or less the same (I think) but the activities
will be organized more tightly.
NOTE that the laboratory time is not scheduled yet. You should
anticipate that each of the 6 scheduled labs will require approximately
a 3 hour period. Scheduling will be organized during the first week of
the semester. Be prepared to be flexible and be prepared for possibly
irregular/ strange scheduling. If you have a very tight course schedule
otherwise then it may be difficult or impossible to accomodate you.
Attendance at the laboratories is a required part of this course. If
you do have problems with the laboratory schedule you may want to
consider registering as an audit.
Because of the uncertainties about staffing, I have not yet completed a
syllabus for the course. When it is complete (which I expect will be in
a few days) it will be linked from my webpage at
http://www.ece.cmu.edu/%7Edwg/teachingf.html. (Don't bother looking for
this on Blackboard).
Be aware that this course requires some laboratory work with chemicals.
If
you know of any reason (allergies, disabilities including difficulty
with lab
access and/ or ability to perform fine manipulations, unwillingness to
work
with chemicals) that you cannot participate in the laboratory you
should contact me immediately.
