Teaching opportunities

- Students enrolled in the ECE Ph.D. program are required to complete two semesters of a Teaching Internship.
- Students should discuss the appropriate time to apply for and fulfill their TI requirement with their advisor.
- TIs need to register for 18-991 (12 units) in the Fall or 18-992 (12 units) in the Spring to receive credit for their assignment.
- TIs are graded; a grade of "B" or better is needed to successfully complete the TI requirement.
- TIs are expected to work approximately 10 hours per week.
- Teaching Internships are nonpaid assignments.
- M.S. students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. are eligible to complete a Teaching Internship during their MS studies.
- Ph.D. students who have completed two semesters of a teaching internship are eligible to apply for a teaching assistant assignment.
- Ph.D. students applying for a teaching assistant assignment must obtain their advisors approval before submitting an application.
- Ph.D. teaching assistants are expected to work approximately 10 hours per week and are paid $18/hours per hour in addition to their normal stipend.
- MSTAs are paid an hourly rate of $15 per hour.
- MSTAs can expect to work approximately 10 hours per week.
- MSTAs need to complete bi-weekly timecards to receive compensation for their assignment.
- Fulltime IMB Students with graduate standing can apply for an MSIMB teaching assistant assignment.
- MSIMB TAs need to register for 18-983 (0 units) in the Fall or 18-984 (0 units) in the Spring to receive credit for their assignment.
- MSIMB TAs are expected to work approximately 10 hours per week.
- MSIMB TAs receive a scholarship equal to 1/3 of their tuition. The stipend is deposited directly into their student account during the third week of classes.
- MSIMB TAs must register for and maintain 36 or more course units during the entire semester they are working as an MSIMB TA.
- MSIMB hourly TAs who are enrolled in less than 36 course units can apply for an MSIMB hourly TA position .
- MSIMB hourly TAs are paid an hourly rate of $15 per hour.
- MSIMB hourly TAs need to complete bi-weekly timecards to receive compensation for their assignment.
- UGTAs typically work as graders and lab assistants .
- UGTAs are paid an hourly rate based on their year of study.
- UGTAs can expect to work at least 10 hours per week.
- UGTAs need to complete bi-weekly timecards to receive compensation for their assignment.
- Undergraduate hourly compensation rate: Sophomore ($11/hr) Junior (11.50/hr) Senior ($12/hr)
Non-native English speakers are international or domestic students whose native language (first language/mother tongue) is not English.
This can include:
- Newly arrived international students
- Students who attended all or part of high school or college in the US
- Students who attended an English speaking high school in another country
- Students who are speakers of another variety of English (e.g. from India, Singapore, Hong Kong)
- All new ECE international students should check-in with the ICC upon arrival to campus.
Ph.D. level International Students working as a Teaching Intern/Teaching Assistant Exam
- Need to register for and take the ITA test before working as a TA/TI.
- Ph.D. level students do not need a confirmed assigned before registering for the ITA test.
- Category 1 or 2 is needed to TA/TI.
- Students who have not received a category 1 must participate in 15 hours of language training during the semester they are a TA/TI
MS level International Students working as a Teaching Intern/Teaching Assistant Exam
- Need to register for the ITA test after they receive a confirmed assignment and before they begin working as a TA.
- Category 1 or 2 is needed to TA/TI.
- Students who have not received a category 1 must participate in 15 hours of language training during the semester they are working as a TA.
Undergraduate level International students with quantitative grading responsibilities only and no contact with students regarding grades and assignments
- Can use either the ICC placement interview score (minimum score of 10)
- Or the iBT Speaking score (minimum score of 18).
Undergraduate international students working as lab assistants and have direct contact with students regarding course work
- Need to register for the ITA test after they have received a confirmed assignment.
- Category 1 or 2 is needed to TA.
- Students who have not received a category 1 must participate in 15 hours of language training during the semester they are working as a TA.
