Data Storage Systems Center

About the DSSC

The Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) at Carnegie Mellon University is an interdisciplinary research and educational organization whose mission is to advance information storage technologies. Faculty and students from a wide range of disciplines at Carnegie Mellon are developing the fundamental understanding of the science and advanced engineering methods required for future generations of information storage systems.

The DSSC is a collaborative effort between several Carnegie Mellon departments:

Chemical Engineering
Department of Chemistry
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Materials Science and Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Department of Physics

Lin, Zhu Win Best Paper Award at MMM 2008

The paper "Measurement of High Data Rate Performance in Perpendicular Magnetic Recording," presented by PhD graduate student Wenchin Lin and ABB Professor of Engineering and DSSC Director Jimmy Zhu, won the best paper award at the 53rd Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials.

DSSC Researchers To Present at MMM 2008

MMM 2008

The Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) will have a strong showing this week at the 53rd Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM 2008), where more than 10 DSSC-affiliated faculty and students will present their latest research. The conference, held through Nov. 14 in Austin, Texas, annually brings together scientists and engineers interested in recent developments in all branches of fundamental and applied magnetism. Emphasis is placed on experimental and theoretical research in magnetism, the properties and synthesis of new magnetic materials, and advances in magnetic technology.

Hu, Bhagavatula Win Best Student Paper Award

Recent DSSC graduate Xinde Hu and Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Vijayakumar Bhagavatula have received the Best Student Paper in Signal Processing and Coding for Data Storage Award from the Data Storage Technical Committee (DSTC) of the IEEE Communication Society.
