Undergraduate Program Tour

The Integrated Master's/Bachelor (IMB) program

Undergraduates have the opportunity to receive, simultaneously or sequentially, B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering by taking an additional 96 units (nominally eight 12 unit courses) of coursework at CMU.

The primary purpose of the IMB degree program is to provide students with superior breadth and depth in technical material, which will better prepare them for careers in industry. The IMB program normally requires an additional academic year of coursework beyond the B.S. Degree Requirements. However, students interested in pursuing the IMB degrees are encouraged to begin taking some of the required graduate courses before their last year.

In the face of the ever-increasing technological and international complexity of the workplace, the additional year of advanced undergraduate and graduate courses required for the IMB. degrees substantially enhances a student's preparation to contribute in an industrial position. The advanced education attainable via the program is likely to be better integrated, of higher quality and more sophisticated than the professional education that would be pursued at other colleges or universities as a part-time or evening program.

Entrance Requirements

The IMB program is available to all undergraduates who maintain a cumulative QPA of 3.0 or better, including the freshman year.

Students must also maintain a QPA of 3.0 in courses used to satisfy the requirements of the M.S. degree. No course with a grade lower than C can be counted toward the Master's degree requirements (those over and above the requirements for the B.S. degree). Students become eligible to apply to the program during the spring semester of the junior year, or the semester in which they accumulate 270 or more units, whichever is earlier.

Financial Aid for IMB Degrees

The financial aid that the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers IMB students is in the form of Teaching Assistantships (for tuition credit) and Research Assistantships (for academic and tuition credit). These positions comprise a variable number of hours of work per week.
