Project description

Thin films of CoFeB electrodes and MgO tunnel barriers along with other Ta/Pt layers can be alternated to form a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) used in MRAM applications. I will be conducting research to find out the effect of different heterogeneous nucleation geometries on the CoFeB amorphous to crystalline phase transformation, which in turn affects the magnetic properties of the film. The objective will be to find a mathematical relation between nucleation geometry and the transformation temperature. This will be done by mathematically calculating the energetics of different geometries in Python to produce a graphical representation of the factors influencing the transformation, which will be compared to already existing experimental data.
