Electroencephalography (EEG) is a widely used technology in neuroscience and cognitive psychology, which measures brain activities by applying multiple electrodes on the scalp and recording the voltage fluctuations in the brain. However, EEG has the disadvantage of limited spatial resolution. The amount of sampling points (the number of electrodes) is one main factor that influences the accuracy of EEG. The objective of this project is to determine the minimum number of the sampling points required to obtain certain accuracy. Fourier analysis will be applied to the samples in order to reconstruct the brain activities. Representing three-dimensional signals will require the knowledge of spherical harmonics. And to better answer the question, the noise level of sampling process also need to be taken into account. The noise of EEG may come from the measurement process due to limitations of hardware and also interactions of different regions of the brain. The final goal of the project will be providing a complete list of critical requirements needed to obtain a given resolution of brain activities.
