My research will focus on an instrumented hard disk drive, or 'spin stand'. This will involve embedded system programming, mainly debugging the current control script and writing a script to output the data in real time to an oscilliscope. I will collect and analyze data regarding the disk's magnetic footprint using a method known as multi-track reading. I will also calibrate the device's resolution and time base. After this work is done, there will be several experiments we can perform to advance the knowledge of the physics behind heat assisted magnetic recording.
