Datta cited by New Scientist on biased algorithms

New Scientist cited Anupam Datta on online algorithm bias. Many algorithms display bias due to flawed data sets and structures. A study by Datta demonstrated that Google’s online advertising algorithm would show ads for high-income jobs to more male than female users. Google pointed out that advertisers target audiences based on gender. But Datta holds that the advertising algorithm could have instead learned from user behavior. If more men click on ads for high-paying jobs, then the algorithms would display such ads more frequently to men. Read the article.
