Koopman on pedestrians and self-driving cars

The Incline quoted Philip Koopman on how autonomous cars detect pedestrians. Koopman details a self-driving car’s situational awareness: 360-degree cameras intake large volumes of data, and the car maintains singular attention on the road. The car’s sensors learn to interpret the environment. This entails interpreting pedestrians and other drivers’ actions. But self-driving cars have a steep learning curve to achieving full awareness on the road. Pedestrians and drivers interact through eye contact and hand signals, which self-driving cars have yet to understand. Regardless, Koopman stresses that pedestrians should treat self-driving cars as they do any other driven by a human. Read the article here.
