Thank you to all who participated in the ECE Valentine's Day Poem Contest. There were so many entries, the judges could not decide on just one. Below are the three winners, and three honorable mentions.

The entire ECE community is welcome to stop by the Valentine's Day table at the end of the first floor of Hamerschlag Hall for a special treat between 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Winning poem #1
A Day for Love
By Mani Swetha Mandava

Roses are red
Violets are blue
In your part of the world, and mine too.
But how can we be one...

If my black burkha troubles you,
And the smell of my henna suffocates you?
If the color of my skin angers you,
And my accent unsettles you?“

O, America! Once a land of dreamers and equality preachers.
Brought to the verge of despair, by today's rhetoric of fear.
O, America! Till the time that is undone,
I promise to heal you with a heart full of love.

So dear people of the world- you are all welcome.
On this Valentine's day and for all the days to come,
I'm here to tell you that I love you.
Each and every one of you.

Winning poem #2
Our Heart is in the Work
By Kara Knickerbocker

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
But why just list flowers
When I can show the beauty of CMU?

Sure, we get rain and snow
And our fair share of fog,
But we've got the spirit of a Tartan
And our mascot, Scotty the dog.

From over 114 countries,
Our bright students travel far
To reach the city of Pittsburgh
By airplane, boat, and car.

No matter if it's business or theater,
Or if science is your slice of pie,
Every talent and mind meets here
And together we're Walking to the Sky.

From across the Cut to Skibo,
You'll find activities to discover,
And between driving cars and Java,
There’s always another invention to uncover.

I know this is Valentine's Day,
And you expected chocolates or a dove
To deliver a more sentimental message,
But trust me— this University spells love.

For our passion lies within us,
Our handprints stretch across the sea,
Our dedication is simply unmatched
(Especially in the department of ECE!)

We're diverse, we're unique,
And without a doubt, we're smart.
We learned best from Andrew Carnegie:
Look at our work- there you'll find our heart.

Winning poem #3
By Mani Swetha  Mandava

roses are red, violets are blue...
carnations, blood and passion
are red too,
and blue is the hermit sky,
the eternal sea
love is the space
between two breaths

Love is,
the remotely known tune
somebody humms from far

a lost lullabi, a door soft ajar.

Love is,

simply dewdrops on the silky grass
a touch of warm water on a winter-skin
and a mother´s gaze caressing the soul

Love is,

A newborn green swinging with leafy wind
I re-collect secret whispers of you,
b e l o v e d
like an unknown fluty song
of a tiny golden oriole.

you are like
a willow thought sleeping between the yellow pages
of an old forgotten book under the pillow
the pale blue soft sand of memory
melting into the dusky waves at nightfall
shadows of your moonlit words writes silver paeans
on my naked body
my love turns a shade
of an intense crimson red,
and you weave my existence
into an azure blue calligraphic thread.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
This Valentine's Day
Let the love shine Through

Watching a movie or working
Whatever you may do
Put your heart into it
Let the love shine through

It could be just friends
Maybe one maybe two
What our community really needs
Is for the love to shine through

Whatever you may identify as
White black silver or blue
No one can stop
That love that shines through

Pittsburgh could be home
Maybe Europe or Asia too?
Wherever you maybe
Let your love shine through

This Valentine's Day
Take some time to renew
Take a step back from the world
And let your love shine through

Honorable mention #2
ECE Puts 2 and 2 Together
By Pragna Mannam

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
From Intro to ECE,
To lab partners building circuits,
I’ve learned to find fun,
In the oddest places.
My partner in crime,
If I offered you a soldered heart,
Would you be my valentine?
