ECE alumni council member honored with APSIPA 2015 Industrial Distinguished Leader award

Ricoh Innovations Corporation (“RIC”), a Silicon Valley-headquartered subsidiary of Ricoh Company, Ltd. that creates global new businesses based on advanced information technology for Ricoh, today announced that its president and CEO Dr. Nikhil Balram received a 2015 Industrial Distinguished Leader Award from the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA). 

Formed in 2009 in Hong Kong, the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA) is a non-profit organization covering research of all aspects of signals and information, and enabling education, research and development exchange for both academia and industry across Asia-Pacific countries. 

The APSIPA Industrial Distinguished Leader award is a distinction for selected APSIPA members or potential members with extraordinary accomplishments that have contributed significantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology. The nomination and selection process is conducted twice a year. 

“Dr. Balram has made broad contributions in image processing and information display systems and has had a substantial impact in a number of industries through the successful deployment of products and services based on his innovations,” stated Dr. Haohong Wang, vice president of industrial relations and development at APSIPA, and general manager of TCL Research America. “We are very pleased to recognize his achievements with this award.” 

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Balram is widely hailed throughout industry and academia as an expert and innovator in advanced information and display technologies, and has been an officer of five publicly listed companies.  He has won numerous awards including a 2012 Gold Stevie® Award for Executive of the Year in the Electronics category in The 9th Annual International Business Awards, a 2012 Fellow Award by the Society for Information Display (SID) and the 2011 Alumni Achievement Award by Carnegie Mellon University. He has significant experience in marketing, development of international business, and management of R&D and engineering, with a track record of building and leading a number of businesses from concept to market success. 

“Having worked with Dr. Balram professionally, I am pleased to see this recognition of his significant accomplishments as a technologist and visionary industry executive,” said Dr. Jelena Kovačević, who is the David Edward Schramm professor and head of the department of electrical and computer engineering, and professor of biomedical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. “This award aptly recognizes his broad contributions to signal and information processing.”

Dr. Balram is an adjunct professor of electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, visiting professor of vision science at the University of California, Berkeley, a guest professor of design and innovation at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, India, and serves on the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) at the School of Engineering at Santa Clara University. He has over 100 US and international patents granted or pending, more than 50 technical publications including two invited book chapters, and has given over 25 keynote speeches at major conferences and events worldwide. 

Dr. Balram received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, where he has also served on the Dean’s Leadership Council, Silicon Valley Advisory Council, and Admissions Council.
