Welcome to the first students at ECE’s SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering!

September 3, 2014

ECE’s first cohort of students in the SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE) will begin classes soon at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou, China. The group photo was taken on August 22, 2014 in the auditorium of the new JIE building at SYSU. This group includes 24 master’s students from Mainland China; 7 international master’s students from as far away as India, Mexico and Australia; and 3 JIE doctoral students.

Student orientation was led by Co-Directors Jimmy Zhu and Wenjun Li. After a celebratory cake-cutting, various JIE faculty members presented on their research topics and projects, including Ming Li, Zhaojun Liu, Yinliang Xu and Jingxi Zhu. Additional speakers and presenters who spoke about student degree requirements and curriculum included Associate Director Linjun Huang, JIE Staff Member Ziyan He and JIE Program Manager Jessica Sun.

The first and second floors of the new JIE building are all ready to be occupied while the remaining third through fifth floors are still undergoing interior construction that is expected to be completed by the end of October.

This first cohort of students will not only have the option of taking courses from JIE faculty in Guangzhou, but they will have access to courses that will be offered online or broadcast from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (CMU).  This will certainly be the case for future students who are part of the double-degree program offered through JIE between SYSU and CMU.
