Ken Mai Awarded NSF/SRC Grant

September 24, 2014

ECE Senior Systems Scientist Ken Mai has received one of nine awards given by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) under the Secure, Trustworthy, Assured and Resilient Semiconductors and Systems Program (STARSS).

According to the NSF, “The awards support research at the circuit, architecture and system levels on new strategies, methods and tools to decrease the likelihood of unintended behavior or access; increase resistance and resilience to tampering; and improve the ability to provide authentication throughout the supply chain and in the field.” The nine STARSS projects will share $4 million over three years.

Mai’s work -- combating integrated circuit counterfeiting using secure chip odometers -- will involve designing and implementing secure chip odometers to provide integrated circuits (ICs) with both a secure gauge of use/age and an authentication of provenance to detect counterfeit ICs.
