ECE alumnus Nikhil Balram received the Gold Stevie® Award for Executive of the Year in the Electronics category at the 9th Annual International Business Awards (IBAs), the world's premier business awards program. The IBAs are open to all individuals and organizations from around the world, with the 2012 program receiving entries from more than 50 nations and territories. Balram was selected for the Executive of the Year by more than 300 executives worldwide who served as judges.
Balram, who earned his bachelor's, master's and doctor's degrees in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon, is CEO of Ricoh Innovations Inc., a Silicon Valley-based subsidiary of Ricoh Company Ltd. He is widely recognized in both academia and industry as an innovator in video and display technologies across multiple platforms. Prior to joining Ricoh, Balram held executive positions at several technology companies, most recently as vice president and general manager of the digital business entertainment unit at Marvell Semiconductor. Before that, he was chief technology officer of the displays group at National Semiconductor Corporation, executive vice president and general manager of the consumer products group at Sage, and vice president of advanced technology at Faroudja Inc.
In addition to his executive experience, Balram has played a significant role at Carnegie Mellon, where he is an adjunct professor of ECE. He has also served on the Dean's Leadership Council, Silicon Valley Advisory Council and the Admissions Council. In 2011, he earned the university's Alumni Achievement Award.
Balram is visiting professor of vision sciences at the University of California, Berkeley; a guest professor at the Indian Institute of Technology; and sits on the Industry Advisory Board for Santa Clara University's School of Engineering. He has authored more than 30 technical papers and holds more than 60 U.S. and foreign patents, granted or pending.
