Jonathon Smereka, a second-year Ph.D. student working with ECE Professor Vijayakumar Bhagavatula, has earned a Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship to support his work on biometrics. The scholarship, sponsored by the National Defense Education Program, supports undergraduate, master's and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for excelling in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.
As a SMART Scholarship winner, Smereka will receive full tuition and related educational expenses for three years, a health insurance reimbursement allowance, cash award and book allowance. He is also guaranteed a summer internship at a Department of Defense (DoD) facility and a post-graduate civilian job in a DoD laboratory or agency upon his 2014 graduation.
Biometrics involves identifying a person by their ocular region (the area including the eye, eyebrow, part of the bridge of the nose and cheek). Smereka focuses his work on correlation filters that provide a similarity metric to a trained Bayesian graph to model any possible true class deformation between the stored template and input query image, allowing for a much more robust method of recognition.
