ECE Department Head T.E. (Ed) Schlesinger and ECE Professor Vijayakumar Bhagavatula presented invited talks at the recent Optical Data Storage (ODS) Topical Meeting in Portland, Oregon. Schlesinger spoke on "Application-Driven Optical Storage," research undertaken in collaboration with ECE Professor Tsuhan Chen, while Bhagavatula's talk was on "Channels Strategies for Handling Low Signal-to-Noise Ratios in Holographic Data Storage Systems," with contributions from ECE graduate students Lakshmi Ramamoorthy and Sheida Nabavi. In addition, ECE alumnus Tim Rausch (Ph.D. 2003) was a program committee co-chair for the meeting. Rausch was advised by Schlesinger while at Carnegie Mellon and now works for Seagate Technology.
The conference focused on high-density recording systems using holographic, volumetric, near-field, super-resolution, and hybrid technology. Sponsors for the event included the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS), the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and the Optical Society of America (OSA).
Both Schlesinger and Bhagavatula have previously served as general co-chairs for the conference; Schlesinger in 2006 and Bhagavatula in 2004. They were both members of the technical program committee last year, and in 2003 Bhagavatula was a co-chair of the technical program committee. In 2005, Nabavi received the event's best student paper award.
