Two Best Student Paper Awards Presented to ECE Graduate Student
Efforts Part of Face Recognition Grand Challenge

ECE graduate student Chunyan Xie recently placed first in the Best Student Paper Award competition held by the IEEE International Workshop on Analysis and Modeling of Faces and Gestures (AMFG) in Bejing, China. She also won third place in the student author contest at the IEEE Workshop on Automatic Identification Advanced Technologies (AutoID) in Buffalo, New York.
Her paper for AMFG was entitled "Kernel Correlation Filter Based Redundant Class-Dependent Feature Analysis (KCFA) on FRGC2.0 Data." Cognitec sponsored the award. The FRGC2.0 data is part of the Face Recognition Grand Challenge (FRGC).
Xie's research for AutoID was on "Face Class Code Based Feature Extraction for Face Recognition." The sponsor for the AutoID prize was IBM Research.
Her work was guided by Professor Vijayakumar Bhagavatula, who is her advisor, and by Marios Savvides, Systems Scientist in ECE, and a major contributor to Carnegie Mellon's efforts in the FRGC. The FRGC poses a series of difficult problems for researchers in industry and academia to solve with methods that will lead to improved face recognition technology. Sponsored by several government agencies, the challenge runs until March.
