DSSC Student and Professor Win Best Paper Award

November 10, 2005

Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) graduate student Matthew Moneck and Professor Jimmy Zhu received a best paper award for their poster and paper, "Fabrication and Testing of Deep Submicron Annular Vertical MRAM" at the 50th Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM) conference in San Jose, California. MMM is the most prominent conference in the field of magnetism.

The research was honored for its novelty, fabrication techniques, and potential toward commercialization and replacing present semiconductor memory devices. The new fabricated magnetic random access memory (MRAM) device is based on a U.S. patent recently awarded to Carnegie Mellon University, co-invented by ECE graduate student Xiaochun Zhu and Jimmy Zhu, who directs the DSSC. Zhu is an ABB Professor of ECE and also hold appointments in the MSE and Physics departments.
