Ilic Edits Special Issue of IEEE Proceedings:
"Power Technology and Policy – Forty Years After the 1965 Blackout"

Marija Ilic, Professor of ECE and EPP, is a guest editor for the Proceedings of the IEEE November 2005 special issue, "Power Technology and Policy – Forty Years After the 1965 Blackout." The journal will focus on the changing demands, technologies, and economics of the electric power industry, covering the following areas:
- Evaluating the operations of large-scale electric power interconnections, especially the technological improvements needed to prevent blackouts during large equipment outages.
- Reviewing the significant design and operational challenges that could affect reliable electricity service in the evolving industry, acknowledging the interdependency of engineering complexities and challenges induced by regulatory changes and other market functions.
- Considering the long-term performance issues of electric power systems, such as security, planning, and the physical and financial uncertainties in decision-making in competitive electricity markets.
Ilic points out that the disciplines underlying work in electric power systems include systems, control theory, and automation; distributed sensors and actuators; and communications, computing, and information technologies. Additionally, the interdependencies between physical, economic, financial, and policy systems demand multidisciplinary studies to address critical industry issues.
