Smailagic Guest Edits IEEE Transactions on Computers; Interviewed for Computerworld

August 1, 2003

Asim Smailagic, Research Professor, was the Guest Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Computers special issue on Wearable Computers, published in August 2003. IEEE Transactions on Computers is the leading archival journal on computers. Smailagic has accepted only 7% of submitted papers.

Included in the journal are two articles authored (or co-authored) by Carnegie Mellon researchers. "Nonideal battery properties and their impact on software design for wearable computers" was written by Thomas Martin of Virginia Tech and Daniel Siewiorek, CMU's Buhl University Professor of ECE and CS; Director of the HCII. "Modeling, analysis, and self-management of electronic textiles" is the work of Diana and Radu Marculescu, both Assistant Professors of ECE, ECE Department Head Pradeep Khosla, and ECE graduate student Philip Stanley-Marbell.

Smailagic was also interviewed with Siewiorek for the August 4 Computerworld article "Smart Rooms: IT-assisted workspaces can boost design productivity." Their team has created an interactive meeting room prototype, called a BARN, with a "Thinking Surface" display design teams can use to share ideas.
