Koopman Quoted in Wired Magazine's Article About "Smart Appliances"

August 1, 2002

Phil Koopman, Associate Professor of ECE and CS, is quoted in Wired Magazine's August article, "The Bugs in the Machine: Embedded Code is the Future- Get Ready to Reboot." The piece highlighted the embedded systems that power devices such as jets, cars, and "smart appliances," including future technologies that could allow your refrigerator to call for repairs, your alarm to sense a chemical leak, and your car to drive-by-wire. There is an increasing need for reliable code to support these complicated systems, according to the report.

"They're starting to put Windows CE into automobile dashboards," Koopman said. "What used to be some gears and springs is now a sophisticated computing complex. Think about it."
