First year orientation

First year orientation

Starts at: August 23, 2015 8:00 AM

Ends at: 5:00 PM

Orientation is a weeklong program organized by current Carnegie Mellon students to introduce incoming students to each other, the campus and local community. Over 230 current students will welcome new students to campus and will work hard throughout Orientation to make sure it's a memorable week and a great introduction to life at Carnegie Mellon.

The programs and events on the opening day of Orientation (Sunday, August 23) will be geared to all family members. Move-in to the residence halls will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 23. Programs will continue throughout the day and will include: information sessions, a resource fair, "Taste of the Tartans" Luncheon Showcase, college meetings and an overview of student services. These programs will continue into the late afternoon. We encourage you to have dinner with your student on campus or at a local restaurant and then return to campus for a residence hall floor meeting around 7:30 p.m. Parents and family members are respectfully asked to depart campus at this point. Orientation programming will then be exclusively focused on the new students from Monday, August 24 through Sunday, August 30. The first day of classes will be on Monday, August 31.

Please note that students will not be permitted to move into the residence halls prior to August 23 unless they are involved in one of the pre-Orientation programs. Students and family members will receive detailed information about Orientation during the summer months.

NOTE:  We will welcome new international students as they move-in on Friday, August 21.  The mandatory International Student Orientation will take place the following day, Saturday, August 22.  International students will then continue with Orientation events on August 23 as other new students move-in. The Office of International Education will provide additional details to international students in the coming months.
