Boris Sofman: Courting Wins for ECE
ECE senior Boris Sofman courts winning scores, in his games and on his exams. The Texan’s powerful stroke helped lead Carnegie Mellon to its first match at the NCAA Team Tournament, and he has been on the dean’s list since 2001. Boris has a double major in CS and volleys between class and practice with ECE teammates Carl Yang, a junior, and sophomores Rex Carazo-Zapetis, Dan Munoz, and Anthony Robinson. Oforitsenere Emiko: A Designer Inside and Outside of Class
Recent ECE M.S. graduate Oforitsenere "Nere" Emiko enjoys circuit testing and hardware verification, digital IC design, SoC design, and one other type of design that may surprise you: fashion design. Nere premiered 31 original pieces and choreographed 50 models for spring carnival's Remix show sponsored by the campus African American organization, SPIRIT. This year marked the second time the Nigerian native created unconventional outfits from everyday items.
The Drew Perkins Hot Seat
Drew D. Perkins is the chief technology officer at Infinera Corporation, a company he co-founded in 2001. Previously, Perkins co-founded and was the CTO of OnFiber Communications and Lightera Networks, now known as CIENA Corporation's Core Switching Devision. He was also principal architect at FORE Systems, Inc. from 1993 until 1997.

As if the birth of his third daughter wasn't enough reason to celebrate, six hours after the delivery Ron Bianchini received a call from his employer, Marconi Communications, offering him a promotion to vice president of product architecture. "I was giddy," he said. "I had just got off the phone with my parents telling them about the baby and I was being offered this huge big-deal promotion." But the more Mr. Bianchini looked into the position, the more he didn't want it.
