ECE Spirit Award Announced
ECE students Jonathan Lee and Jesse Vizcaino are the first recipients of the ECE Spirit Award, presented to a graduating senior and/or Integrated Master's/Bachelor's student, in recognition of their exceptional community building efforts in the ECE Department. The ECE Spirit Award reflects a history of outstanding volunteer service and leadership in ECE student organizations.
John Cohn: ECE Alumnus, IBM Fellow & Role Model
He's captured headlines in USA Today and EETimes, taking his "Jolts and Volts" science and technology demonstrations to hundreds of schools around the nation, Walt Disney World, and the New York Hall of Science. He's been called "IBM's own Einstein" and for 15 years has enjoyed playing a mad scientist during his show, making engineering fun for nearly 30,000 kids.
Roland Wunderlich: Intel Ph.D. Fellowship Winner
When Roland Wunderlich applies statistical measurement and modeling techniques to computer architecture, his simulations can have impact--for example, one project led to an Itanium central processing unit (CPU) model that was plugged into a computer system at Intel. The ECE graduate student and winner of an Intel Ph.D. Fellowship hopes to work with his new Intel award mentor to explore how high performance computing (HPC) software works on CPU designs.
Brandon Salmon: Intel Ph.D. Fellowship Winner
ECE graduate student Brandon Salmon, the winner of an Intel Ph.D. Fellowship, is conducting research that hits close to home. He is studying ways to store and protect the digital information we have in our houses--everything from our sensitive financial information to our treasured photos. Learning how technology interacts with today's marketplace, Brandon is taking courses in engineering and business to prepare for a promising future.
Jeffrey Nelson: IBM/SRC Fellowship Recipient
ECE graduate student Jeffrey Nelson is on the winning circuit--this year he won an IBM/SRC Fellowship through the SRC Graduate Fellowship Program, following a nationwide contest for outstanding academic achievement and microelectronics research. He also received a Benjamin Garver Lamme/Westinghouse Graduate Fellowship earlier in the year, and last year was selected for honorable mention in the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship competition. Whether on his motorcycle or in the lab, Jeff is on the move.
