jimsmall.jpg Bain To Discuss Perpendicular Recording Alternatives at MMM 2010

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor and Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) Associate Director James Bain and other members of the DSSC will discuss the future of traditional magnetic recording and other data storage issues at the 55th annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM 2010) this week in Atlanta. During a talk scheduled for 8:42 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, Bain will unveil a white paper demonstrating that traditional perpendicular recording can last about two more years before it needs to be replaced by alternatives like heat-assisted magnetic recording and bit patterned media (BPM) — both of which represent major transitions for the industry. F10Review_sm.jpg?w=130 Data Storage Experts Gather for Fall Technical Review

Data storage experts from across the globe gathered at Carnegie Mellon University on Tuesday, Sept. 28, for the Data Storage Systems Center's Fall Technical Review. Held twice each year, the center's reviews provide an opportunity for faculty and students at the university to share their latest research findings with representatives of the DSSC's industrial sponsor companies and other data storage professionals. This year, the review brought more than 80 attendees together for the opportunity to not only hear important research updates, but to also plan and strategize for the industry's future. (Read more.)
