ECE & SCS Host Summer Alumni Events

Last summer, Carnegie Mellon students and alumni had the opportunity to visit with each other during events hosted by the ECE Department and the School of Computer Science (SCS) in the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, and Seattle. ECE and SCS students interning in each city and alumni from the area were invited.

Super Gigi, Jeff Nelson, Hannah Pileggi, and Larry Pileggi CSSI Hosts Alumni & Friends Reception at DAC

The Center for Silicon System Implementation (CSSI) hosted its annual alumni and friends reception at the 43rd IEEE/ACM Design Automation Conference (DAC) on July 25 in San Francisco. DAC is the premier electronic design automation (EDA) and silicon solution event.

Tom Martin and Meghan Quirk ECE Alumnus Wins Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists & Engineers

ECE alumnus Tom Martin (Ph.D. 1999; M.S. 1994) was honored last month for receiving the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his research designing electronic textiles for medical monitoring. President George W. Bush spoke to the winners, and his science advisor, John H. Marburger, III, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, presided over the awards ceremony. The award is the highest honor conferred by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their careers. Martin is an associate professor of ECE at Virginia Tech.

John Cohn ECE Alumnus Named IBM Fellow

ECE alumnus John Cohn (Ph.D. 1991) has been named an IBM Fellow, one of eight granted the company's highest technical honor this year. Cohn is a distinguished engineer and chief scientist of design automation in the IBM Systems and Technology Group in Burlington, Vermont. He was recognized as IBM's premier technical leader in electronic design automation (EDA) and also noted for his efforts in science, engineering, and math education outreach to schoolchildren.

Pavel Nikitin and Daniel Stancil ECE Alumnus' Paper One of Most Accessed in IEEE

A paper co-authored by ECE alumnus Pavel Nikitin (Ph.D. 2002) has remained on the IEEE's list of 100 most accessed documents for six consecutive months. Nikitin co-wrote "Antenna Design for UHF RFID Tags: A Review and a Practical Application," with his colleagues at Intermec Technologies Corporation, where he is a Lead Engineer. He is also an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the EE Department at the University of Washington. The article was published in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation last December. Nikitin's faculty advisor at Carnegie Mellon was ECE Professor Daniel Stancil.
