Engineering Dean Receives Cyber Education Award
Carnegie Mellon University's Pradeep Khosla received the prestigious Cyber Education Champion Award from the Business Software Alliance during a gala celebration March 6 in Washington, D.C. Khosla is dean of the College of Engineering, as well as the Philip and Marsha Dowd Professor of ECE and Robotics. He is the former head of the ECE Department, an alumnus (M.S. 1984; Ph.D. 1986), and the founding co-director of Carnegie Mellon CyLab.
ECE Alumnus Named Engineering Dean at EPFL
ECE alumnus Demetri Psaltis (B.S. ECE and Economics, 1974; M.S. ECE, 1975; Ph.D. ECE, 1977) has been appointed dean of the School of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and applied optics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland, effective January 1. Returning to his native Europe, Psaltis will work to strengthen engineering's central role at EPFL.
ECE Alumni Return for Homecoming
Many generations of ECE alumni returned to campus to participate in a variety of homecoming activities sponsored by the department, College of Engineering, and the university. Highlights of the weekend included ECE Department Head T.E. (Ed) Schlesinger welcoming ECE alumni to campus, a college reception, Frederick Dill (S'54, S'56, E'58) receiving a distinguished achievement award, and an ECE alumni breakfast.
Alumni Create Phone System for Campus Bus Routes
Recent Carnegie Mellon graduates Vishal Chordia (M.S. ECE, 2006), Amit Agarwal and Lawrence Lee (both B.S. C.S, 2006), used the skills they learned in school and their company's technology to make finding public transportation around campus easier. They returned to the university representing their new employer, Angel.com, at the technical opportunities conference (TOC), and shared MyCMUBus, a free automated phone system that announces buses coming to and from campus.
Mahalanobis Named "Scientist of the Year"
ECE alumnus Abhijit Mahalanobis (M.S. 1985; Ph.D. 1987) won the "Scientist of the Year" Emerald Award from the Minorities in Research Science (MIRS) organization. He will be featured in Science Spectrum magazine and will accept the award at the MIRS Conference this week in Baltimore. Mahalanobis is the technical lead and manager for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control's Signal Imaging and Processing group. He develops major components of the missile defense system for the U.S. Army.
