Clarke Elected to Academy of Arts & Sciences
Edmund M. Clarke, the FORE Systems University Professor of Computer Science and professor of electrical and computer engineering, is among 212 leaders in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, business and public affairs who have been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (AAAS) this year. Clarke is the 17th AAAS member affiliated with Carnegie Mellon. (Read more.)
Becker Wins SMART Scholarship
Second-year Ph.D. student Jonathan Becker has earned a Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship to support his work on evolved anti-jamming beamforming antenna arrays. The scholarship, sponsored by the National Defense Education Program, supports undergraduate, master's and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for excelling in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Amini, DeBruhl Earn NDSEG Fellowships
Third-year Ph.D. student Shahriyar Amini and Bruce DeBruhl, a second-year Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley, have won National Defense Science and Engineering (NDSEG) Graduate Fellowships for their promising research in engineering and science. The highly competitive fellowship, sponsored by the Department of Defense, recognizes U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue graduate study in one of 15 science and engineering disciplines. Selection is based on factors including the applicant's academic record, personal statement, publications, community service, job experience, recommendations and GRE scores. As NDSEG fellows, Amini and DeBruhl will each receive full tuition for three years (as well as any mandatory fees), a monthly stipend and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance. (Read more.)

SAFARI/CALCM Paper Published in IEEE Micro's Top Picks
A paper by ECE Ph.D. student Yoongu Kim, computer science Ph.D. student Michael Papamichael, Associate Professor of Computer Science Mor Harchol-Balter and ECE Assistant Professor Onur Mutlu has been selected for IEEE Micro magazine's annual Top Picks issue. The leading IEEE periodical in computer architecture and design annually selects 10–12 "Top Pick" computer architecture papers of the past year based on the publication's novelty and potential for long-term impact. The group's paper, "Thread Cluster Memory Scheduling: Exploiting Differences in Memory Access Behavior," was one of 11 selected for the 2010 Top Picks issue. (Read more.)
