Dr. Takeo Kanade Kanade to Receive Franklin Institute's Prestigious Bower Award

Takeo Kanade, U.A. and Helen Whitaker University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics and Professor of ECE, is the 2008 recipient of the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from the historic Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. He is being honored for his "visionary leadership and scientific accomplishments in the design of perceptual robotic algorithms and systems that function in the physical world."

Dr. Alex Hills Hills Elected Alaska Engineer of the Year

Alex Hills, Distinguished Service Professor of ECE and EPP, has been elected Engineer of the Year by the Alaska Engineering Societies. Nominated by the Alaska Section of the IEEE for the annual award, Hills was recognized "for outstanding professional leadership, technical excellence, and dedicated community service." The honor was based upon his work in developing Wi-Fi technology and in developing the telecommunications network in rural and remote parts of Alaska.

Dr. Franz Franchetti Franchetti Awarded 2007 Culture Prize in Science

Dr. Franz Franchetti, ECE Systems Scientist, is one of five recipients of the City of Wiener Neustadt's 2007 Culture Prize, given this year in the area of science. The winners were officially announced on February 21, 2008. Dr. Franchetti will receive his prize from the Mayor of Wiener Neustadt in April.

Dr. Edmund M. Clarke Clarke Wins Computing's Highest Honor

Computer Science Professor Edmund M. Clarke and two computer scientists from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Grenoble in France, are winners of the 2007 A.M. Turing Award in recognition of their pioneering work on an automated method for finding design errors in computer hardware and software. Clarke has a courtesy appointment in ECE and advises ECE graduate students.

Dr. Shawn Blanton Blanton Named Director of CSSI

Professor of ECE Shawn Blanton is the new director of the Center for Silicon System Implementation (CSSI). Blanton succeeds Larry Pileggi, Tanoto Professor of ECE, who served as director since 2000.

CSSI is focused on all aspects of chip design spanning the spectrum from system-level architectures to analog/digital circuits, to the physics and the modeling of the complexities found in semiconductor manufacturing.
