Engineering Students Donate More Than $1,000 Worth of Toys to "Toys for Tots"
Carnegie Mellon University engineering students culminated their participation in the U.S. Marine Corps' "Toys for Tots" campaign by delivering more than $1,000 worth of toys via horse and sleigh to U.S. Marine Corps personnel at noon, Dec. 4 in front of Carnegie Mellon's University Center off Forbes Avenue.
ECE Senior a Finalist in CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Award Contest
Michael Kasick, a senior in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), was selected as a finalist in the Computing Research Association's (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Award competition for his work on fingerpointing research under the guidance of Priya Narasimhan, Assistant Professor of ECE and Institute for Software Research International (ISRI). The results of his CIT honors project were published last month at the USENIX Workshop on Real Large Distributed Systems (WORLDS).
Carnegie Mellon Researchers Win HPC Analytics Challenge at ACM/IEEE Supercomputing 2006
Computer science (CS) graduate student Tiankai Tu and David O'Hallaron (on the left of the photo), Associate Professor of CS and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), led a team of researchers to win the High Performance Computing (HPC) Analytics Challenge at ACM/IEEE Supercomputing 2006 in Tampa, FL. ECE graduate student Julio Lopez (on the right of the photo) was a member of the winning group.
Computing Symposium to Honor Daniel Siewiorek
"Four Decades of Innovation," a symposium in honor of University Professor and computing pioneer Daniel Siewiorek's 60th birthday will be held Dec. 4 on campus. The event will honor Siewiorek's seminal contributions that have shaped computer systems throughout the last four decades, including microprocessors, reliable and fault-tolerant computer systems, wearable computers and context-aware computing. Graduate students are welcome to attend the talks.
Best Paper Awarded to ECE Faculty Members
Franz Franchetti, ECE Systems Scientist, and Markus Püschel, Associate Research Professor of ECE, together with collaborators from Vienna University of Technology, won a Best Paper Award for their publication, "Automatic Performance Optimization of the Discrete Fourier Transform on Distributed Memory Computers." The paper will be presented at the International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Application (ISPA) in Sorrento, Italy, from December 4-7.
