Dr. Franz Franchetti Franchetti Awarded 2007 Culture Prize in Science

Dr. Franz Franchetti, ECE Systems Scientist, is one of five recipients of the City of Wiener Neustadt's 2007 Culture Prize, given this year in the area of science. The winners were officially announced on February 21, 2008. Dr. Franchetti will receive his prize from the Mayor of Wiener Neustadt in April.

Dr. Edmund M. Clarke Clarke Wins Computing's Highest Honor

Computer Science Professor Edmund M. Clarke and two computer scientists from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Grenoble in France, are winners of the 2007 A.M. Turing Award in recognition of their pioneering work on an automated method for finding design errors in computer hardware and software. Clarke has a courtesy appointment in ECE and advises ECE graduate students.

Dr. Shawn Blanton Blanton Named Director of CSSI

Professor of ECE Shawn Blanton is the new director of the Center for Silicon System Implementation (CSSI). Blanton succeeds Larry Pileggi, Tanoto Professor of ECE, who served as director since 2000.

CSSI is focused on all aspects of chip design spanning the spectrum from system-level architectures to analog/digital circuits, to the physics and the modeling of the complexities found in semiconductor manufacturing.

Amith Singhee and Rob A. Rutenbar Singhee and Rutenbar Win 2008 VLSI Best Paper Award

ECE Ph.D. student Amith Singhee and Rob A. Rutenbar, Professor of ECE and CS, and their colleagues Benton H. Calhoun and Jiajing Wang of the University of Virginia, are winners of the 2008 Best Student Paper Award at the 21st International Conference on VLSI Design.

Boss, Tartan Racing Champion Carnegie Mellon's Boss in the Spotlight on National TV

Luckily for Carnegie Mellon's Tartan Racing Team, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" is just a slogan, not reality. The team's robotic sport utility vehicle — Boss — is there for the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week, and it seems like the whole world knows. Boss was featured in segments on the NBC "Today Show," CBS' "Early Show," and the CBS Evening News. In addition, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times both covered Boss.
