Research Interests

Ultrahigh-Density Magnetic Recording

This project is directed at developing heads and media for recording at densities of 1Tbpsi ten times the current densitywhich is expected to enable storage of over 400 Gbytes in a 2.5 inch disk drive. The work involves extensive use of microfabrication facilities to develop new magnetic materials and processes for heads and media, as well as development of new test systems for characterizing magnetic recording heads and media.

Probe Storage Technology

The goal of this project is to study the feasibility of making a probe storage device with a capacity of 10 Gbytes in a SD-Flash form factor. Writing and reading approaches are being evaluated.
