Research Interests

Wireless Communications

The growth of wireless networks has created a need for better understanding of radio frequency propagation in buildings and in situations in which the terrain and network configurations are rapidly changing owing to user mobility. Professor Stancil is working to develop improved methods for achieving efficient radio frequency (RF) coverage in buildings, and efficient propagation models for networks with rapidly changing environments.

Optical Recording

Optical disk drives are attractive because of their high storage density and the remova- bility of the disks. In collaboration with other faculty in the Data Storage Systems Center and the National Storage Industry Consortium, Professor Stancil is working to develop new technologies for compact, short-wavelength optical recording heads that will improve the storage density and the performance of optical systems. Topics of specific interest include integrated optic scanning devices and near-field optical recording.
