Research Interests

Control Theory

Professor Messner's research emphasis is on system identification and controller design for time-varying, nonlinear, highly distributed or multi-input/multi-output systems. Professor Messner has worked on the development of repetitive and learning control algorithms, adaptive control and multi-input controller design.

Data Storage Systems

Professor Messner's interest is in increasing the storage capacity of data storage systems through improving servo system performance through work on sensors, actuators, system dynamics and algorithms. Example projects are improving position error signal generation on disk drives and tape drives, using active vibration control in disk drive actuators, compensating for nonlinear friction dynamics in disk drive actuator ball bearings, control for dual-stage actuator systems, and multi-input/ multi-output control for high-speed and low-tension tape transport.

Biology

Professor Messner is developing controlled microfluidic devices for spatiotemporal investigation of the dynamics of biological cells.

Other Interests

Professor Messner is also interested in aspects of the fabrication and control of microelectromechanical systems devices, control of autonomous land and air vehicles, and robotic manipulation.
