18-882A – A Special Topics in Energy Systems: Power Electronics

12 units

This course provides a detailed overview of power electronics devices and their use in power systems.

The first part of the course covers power systems analysis tools for: 1. Power Flow 2. Three-phase power flow 3. Optimal power flow 4. State estimation 5. Transient stability 6. Dynamic stability 7. Power quality

Students' understanding of these topics is reinforced through a series of short programming assignments using Matlab and programming examples from the textbooks. The first part of the course also covers power electronics devices such as:

  1. Thyristor Controlled Reactor (TCR)
  2. Static VAR Compensator (SVC)
  3. Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC)
  4. Static Compensator (STATCOM)
  5. Solid State Series Compensator (SSSC)
  6. Universal Power Flow Controller (UPFC)
  7. High Voltage DC-Voltage Source Converter (HVDC-VSC)
  8. Power electronics for modern wind turbines

The power electronics devices will be simulated using PSpice. After students master both standard power systems algorithms and power electronics devices, they will integrate power systems devices into the standard algorithms gaining advanced simulation, analysis, and optimization knowledge required by today's power systems industry and R&D community.

The second part of the course covers advanced power conditioning methods using the devices covered in the first part of the course. This part of the course is more theoretical than the first part and is based on the instantaneous power theory. The textbook used for this material is the only book on the subject to date. The topics covered are:

  1. The Instantaneous Power Theory a. The p-q Theory b. The abc Theory c. Comparison between the p-q and abc Theory
  2. Shunt active filters
  3. Hybrid series active filters
  4. Combined series and shunt power conditioners
