Welcome to James C. Hoe's Home Page

I am an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. I hold a courtesy appointment in the Computer Science Department. My research interests are in computer architecture and high-level hardware description and synthesis. I received my Ph.D. in EECS from MIT in 2000 (S.M., 1994). I received my B.S. in EECS from UC Berkeley in 1992.

I co-direct CALCM , and I am affiliated with CSSI and CyLab. I lead the OpenSPARC Center of Excellence at Carnegie Mellon.

I teach ECE 18-240: Fundamentals of Computer Engineering this Fall. I have open office hours from 3:00 to 4:00pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. Additional office hours can be arranged by appointment. (Other courses I have taught.)

I represent ECE in the CMU Faculty Senate. Please contact me if you have feedback or suggestions.

I am co-organizing the 2008 MEMOCODE HW/SW Co-Design Contest with Krste Asanovic (UC Berkeley) and Patrick Schaumont (Virginia Tech). The 2008 contest results are available.

(** I apologize I cannot reply to email queries about graduate school admission given the traffic volume. I do look at them, especially those with something specific to comment. If you are interested in my projects, please submit an application to ECE and reference me in your statement of purpose. If you want to know the truth about graduate school, read this.)
