Bio
H. Liao is a Ph.D. candidate in ECE at Carnegie Mellon. Before he studied at Carnegie Mellon, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Electric Power Engineering at Huazhong Univ. of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei Prov., China. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees in electrical engineering both in Chongqing Univ., Chongqing, China.  From May to September, 2006, he had his internship as a power engineer at System Operation Division, PJM interconnection, Norristown, PA.  He was the winner of first place in Men's 200m Butterfly in College Swimming Contest 1996 in Chongqing municipality as a member of Varsity Swim Team(1995 ~ 1997).

Current Projects

Measuring Vulnerability to Cascading Failures in Electric Power Systems - This project focuses on modeling statistical behaviors of cascading failures in large-scale power systems; these models are used 1) to devise online metrics for the risk of cascading failures in power systems and 2) to recognize key factors contributing to cascade-induced system collapse.
Probabilistic Analysis in Hybrid Systems - Traditional system protection is designated to resist a given set of configurations. The consequence of unexpected events may be catastrophic to the integrity of power systems. We are seeking alternatives to analyze power systems as switching dynamic systems using probabilistic methods in order to resist large power blackouts.
Wide-Area Sensing with Sparse Prior- We are interested in detecting system structure disturbances by a small group of wide-area fast sensors.
